ROLLER SKATING AND FITNESS:

In America, approximately 17 percent of children ages 2-19 are obese, according to the United States Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention. This statistic does not include children who are simply overweight.

 

Lifestyle choices like poor nutrition and lack of exercise are contributing to an unhealthy population. The American Heart Assocation says that 65 percent of all adults are obese or overweight and that 1/3 of high school students do not get the amount of physical activity that they need.

 

Recognized by the American Heart Association as a healthy activity, roller skating offers the following health benefits:

 

One Hour of moderate roller skating at 6 mph burns 330 calories for a 143 pound person. If that same person

skates vigorously at 10 mph, he/she wll burn up to 590 calories per hour.

 

Roller skating is equivalent to jogging in terms of health benefits, caloric consumption, body fat reduction, leg strength development and is safer than jogging.

AEROBIC EXERCISE:

Roller skating provides a complete

aerobic workout for over 640 of the

body's muscles, especially the heart.

Roller skating causes less than 50

percent of the impact shock

to joints compared to running,

according to the University of

Massachusetts.
